How long does SEO take? An honest timeline

September 22, 2026 · 5 min read

Anyone who gives you an exact date for SEO results is guessing, or selling. What you can have is a realistic range, and a list of things to watch along the way. This is ours.

The honest answer

It depends on four things: how competitive your searches are, how healthy your site is today, how much you publish and improve, and how strong your reputation is compared with the sites ahead of you. A local plumber targeting a small area and a software company targeting a national keyword are playing different games.

As a general guide, many sites see early signals within the first few months, such as better indexing, more impressions and movement on lower-competition searches. Meaningful gains on competitive searches often take six months or longer. That is a typical pattern, not a promise.

No one can promise you the number one spot. A good agency can promise the work and the report.

What happens in the first 30 days

Mostly groundwork. We get access, baseline your traffic and fix urgent technical problems. You should not expect traffic changes yet, and a report that claims them should make you suspicious. What you should see: a written baseline, a ranked fix list and the first fixes underway.

Days 31 to 90: the first signals

Search engines re-crawl and re-evaluate pages that have changed. New content starts to be indexed. You may see more impressions in Search Console, and some pages creeping up for easier searches. Think of this as proof the machinery is running, not proof of a result.

Months 4 to 6 and beyond

This is where compounding starts. Pages published earlier settle, links earned earlier count and the data is deep enough to show what is working. Competitive searches take longer still. If your market is crowded, plan for a longer horizon.

Why we suggest six months, but don't require it

SEO is slow, so a three-month look can mislead. We recommend a six-month horizon for monthly work. But we do not lock you in: cancel with 30 days' notice, because a vendor that depends on a contract to keep you is not confident in its work.

How to tell if it is working

Ask for the baseline, then ask each month: what changed, why and what is next. If you cannot get a straight answer, that is information.
